This project site for Equine Breeds encourages you to consider how and why breed emerged as a category of animal identity. Bringing together research and scholarship of the history, culture, sociology, geography, and anthropology of horse/human relationships, the online exhibits presented here explore how increasingly specialized kinds of horses both helped shape and were shaped within the modern world.

    Part of a larger project that examines the evolution of breed identity alongside other categories of identity such as race, class, and nationality, this exhibit explores the history of ‘breed’ in relation to horses. We’re interested not only in what breed ‘is’ but also in what it ‘does.’ How, for example, does the concept of breed evolve and what social or cultural ends does it serve? Why does ‘breed’ matter, and what are its effects on horses and on humans?
